Tom, 48, was commentating the Cowboys-Chicago Bears game alongside Kevin Burkhardt on Sep. 21 when he reacted to the Cowboys’ wide receiver George Pickens slamming his helmet while appearing visibly upset.

In response, Tom said on the Fox Sports broadcast, “Those helmets can be…It’s like the dog at home. Kick the dog, throw the helmet, whatever it takes.”

Now, it’s worth pointing out that “kick the dog” is a metaphor for displaced anger, or taking out aggression on a defenseless target. Some people argued that Tom was using this metaphor in a harmless manner, with one tweet reading, “I think he meant the term ‘kick the dog’ to express anger towards something that can’t express their feelings.”

“It’s a figure of [speech]. When someone says ‘Look for a dog to kick’, they’re not actually talking about dogs or kicking. Instead, it’s an expression used to describe someone who is actively seeking a target or an outlet for their frustration or anger,” someone else wrote.

However, Tom’s comment — and perhaps his specific reference to “the dog at home” — rubbed numerous internet users the wrong way.

One post read, “Tom Brady comparing a player slamming his helmet in anger to kicking your dog at home isn't the color commentary I was expecting,” while someone else described the comment as “disgraceful.”

“Tom Brady: ‘those helmets can be like dogs at home...kick the dog, throw a helmet.’ What the actual fuck?! Disgusting,” another tweet read, with one more person writing, “We don’t harm or encourage violence against animals, please do better.”
