Orlando Bloom is opening up about what it was like undergoing an extreme physical transformation for his new movie, The Cut.

In the upcoming Sean Ellis thriller, Orlando, 48, plays an ex-boxing champion who “trains for redemption” before seemingly “spiraling” when “obsession takes hold.”

Speaking with People this week about the “challenge” of taking on such a taxing role, Orlando admitted that while he was “excited,” he did not anticipate that it would take such a huge mental toll on him.

“What I hadn’t expected and was surprised by was the mental toll that this kind of intense discipline takes,” he said. “The paranoia and anxiety were very real and disturbing, caused by the lack of sleep — turns out you can’t sleep when you’re hungry.”

Orlando also noted that he experienced “obsessive thoughts of food” after restricting his water intake to get to his “lowest weight.” “Water restriction to get to my lowest weight for the final scenes led to obsessive thoughts of food, dreaming of what I could eat when finally off a diet of tuna and cucumber,” he said, before warning that this extreme physical transformation is “definitely not something to try at home.”

Last year, Orlando clarified, “The last three weeks in London, before we started filming, were just tuna and cucumber.”

The actor added, “I was supervised weekly and had my blood work monitored by an expert nutritionist, Phillip Goglia, who helped me lose 30 pounds in approximately three months.”

“Ultimately, this is a story about the struggles we all face and what it takes to battle our internal demons and find self-acceptance,” he said.
