Kayla Nicole is focused on joy as her ex, Travis Kelce, celebrates his recent engagement to Taylor Swift.

For a quick reminder, Travis and Kayla — who is a sports journalist and media personality — were in an on-and-off relationship for five years, starting in 2017. The pair split for good in 2022, and Kayla has described the “public” split as “overwhelming” for her to deal with.

Travis began dating Taylor in 2023, and since then, Kayla’s name has been repeatedly brought into conversations about her ex’s high-profile dating life. And so, it’s no surprise that after Travis and Taylor announced their engagement on Aug. 26, people began speculating about Kayla’s thoughts on the milestone.

Kayla hasn’t talked about or acknowledged the engagement at the time of writing. However, hours after Taylor and Travis dropped their joint announcement on Instagram, she reposted a telling video clip in which Tracee Ellis Ross discusses the topic of “joy.”

In the video originally posted by @offthecuff, Tracee explains: “I think joy is different from happiness. I feel like happiness is something you can get at 7-Eleven, and joy is something you earn and work for and takes practice…I feel like joy has legs. I feel like joy has feet, I feel like joy has roots, I feel like it creates space and allows for room for more than just a good day.”
She continues: “I think joy is an attitude. I think joy is a perspective, and I think joy is a lens through which I live and look at my life.”

Over the top of the footage, which she reposted to her IG story, Kayla wrote: “Read about this very concept years ago in a book called Choose Joy: Because Happiness Isn't Enough. I aspire! So so good.”
